If I could change something about Macon County, it would be doing something to help  children better know their community. Local teens do not seem to be interested in college or volunteerism. If I could come up with a way to get them to want to volunteer to help others, I think they would learn a lot, and I think it would be a way for them to want to learn more so that they can assist others while doing something good for them.

I think that a long time ago young people wanted to be doctors, lawyers, and social workers, etc., but now, most of the children I see just want to get out of school and hang out. I just do not see the enthusiasm and the drive of the past. Now it seems so many young people want to be rappers and entertainers, but no one has said anything about being a business person. Most of the young women with children want to be professionals now, but that was not their first choice. They just wanted to be out on their own, which means working in one of the low-wage service jobs that fill the South.
Communities play a very vital role in human behavior. People change their behavior according to their environment. People change their community in search of good job, opportunities, good education and for a better future. It takes time for people to adjust to their new society. Changing the community might have both positive and negative effects on a person’s behavior. There are different communities in different countries. Some people leave their country because their country did not have good opportunities. When people change their country, they enter in a completely new environment filled with new people and new things to discover. Their behavior might change easily. It can affect their self-esteem and their confidence. People can act differently in a new environment. Meeting new people and visiting new places might affect a person’s mentality. They might change into a completely new person.

Helping teens change their environment gives them the opportunity to do something with their lives. Not all teens are capable of going to college, but I would like for them to be successful in whatever they do. I do not want to see young people just drop out of school and do nothing with their lives. Being a graduate of the Macon County School System will make me want to try even harder to better my community.

The children in Macon County do not know very much about the history of Macon County. I would like for them to know more, so that they will know that Macon County is not the bad place that everyone claims it is. Many successful people came out of Macon County. For example, Macon County is known for the Tuskegee Airmen who helped fight for our nation during World War II. I used to be one of those children that did not know anything about Macon County. For one thing, I was not raised in Tuskegee, so I wasn’t brought up on all the stories about the events that took place in the town.

I give a lot of credit to Bridge Builders for allowing me to be a part of their program. If it were not for them taking my classmates and me on a trip to the Tuskegee Human and Civil Rights Multicultural Center, I am afraid I still would not have known much about Tuskegee. For one thing I would not have known that Macon County used to be under water. I was very shocked when I heard that, because I would have never thought that something like that would have occurred. This is why I want to give back to my community so that children my age will have the opportunity to go through what I’ve been through—and gain as much knowledge as they can about their community.
